North Shore Hamilton

North Shore Harbour Brisbane;
This area was formerly home to Brisbane’s working wharves, which were established in 1923 Hamilton was developed extremely early in European settlement when Brisbane was still a penal colony, the women's prison was moved to Hamilton in 1833. Hamilton Road (now the airport thoroughfare, Kingsford Smith Drive) was originally built by convict labour as an access road to the prison.

 

 

Sketching in Adelaide Street

A wonderful morning with the Brisbane City Sketchers.  Loads of laughter and fun.  I chose to sketch Brisbane Arcade, and one of the five gorgeous light posts, that have bronze sculptures in them by Fred Whitehouse.

The Brisbane Arcade was build on scandal, death, and robbery.  You can read about it here.

Built in 1923 on the site of notorious confessed murderer Patrick Mayne’s butcher shop, the Brisbane Arcade is a splendid Edwardian baroque alley of gallery shops. Patrick’s son Dr James Mayne employed the son of 19th century architectural guru Richard Gailey, Richard Gailey Jnr to design it as a legacy to the people of Brisbane – a gesture that many believe was an atonement to the alleged sins of his father.

 Sculpted by Fred Whitehouse 1996 the are five light posts with the following sculptures. 

Possum - Flying Fox - Snake - Goanna - Birds.

Public Holiday Sketching

What a wonderful morning, sketching with the Brisbane City Sketchers at Gardens Point.  We sketched the magnificent Mansions, or part thereof.  Such a beautiful building, but very intimidating.  I started with graphite, then inked it then watercolour.

 I sketched this in my handmade 8" x 7.5 sketchbook on 90lb paper.

I was visiting a very dear friend today and we sat in her garden and sketched..

Lots of angels, but fun to draw..

St Nicholas Free Serbian Orthodox Church

I did enjoy drawing this wonderful St Nicholas Free Serbian Orthodox Church..The Church designed by T.B.F. Gargett of Brisbane, was opened and dedicated on 9 September 1933. Sketched in my 8.5" x 6" handmade sketchbook graphite/pen/watercolour.

Tingalpa Pioneers Chapel

Tingalpa Pioneers' chapel, Christ Church  was founded by the Anglicans founded in 1868
It was - Demolished by cyclone in 1885 and rebuilt using the original timbers - Decommissioned and stripped for demolition in 1996 but saved when chapel and cemetery were Heritage Listed
