Sketching with a friend for Sketchbook Skool

Leeanne and I decided to go to lunch at the French Twist in Bulimba.  What a delightful place for a meal.  We shared a frittata and salad, and it was heavenly.  After eating we sketched for our homework on Sketchbook Skool

It was a fun 3 hours.  We were surprised that we were there that long, and the staff were so wonderful to us.  They even let us stay after they had closed and were cleaning up, so we could finish our sketches.

The Old Museum was originally called the Exhibition Building and Concert Hall. It was built in 1891 for the Queensland National Agricultural and Industrial Association after Brisbane's first exhibition building, which had occupied the land, was destroyed by fire on 13 June 1888.

Lunchtime sketch

Built 1930-31 it is art deco in style features a commanding facade that was designed by the Brisbane architectural firm of T.R. Hall and L.B. Phillips, who also designed the Brisbane City Hall

Clock tower on top of South Brisbane Town Hall.  It is now the administration building for the girls school, Sommerville House

The Brisbane Plein Air Painters met today, at Newstead Park.  It was a super day, and I  ended up with a work in progress.  I am going to go back and finish my painting, when this layer is dry.

Clock on the old Post Office building.  Interesting, that the building has two identical sides, except that there is only one clock.

Sketching University of Queensland St Lucia

The University of Queensland (UQ) is in the top 100 universities worldwide, measured through a number of major independent university rankings: the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings and, Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities. UQ is also the largest university in Queensland.

The first building to be built was the Forgan Smith Building after the Premier of the day, and was completed in 1939. During World War II, it became the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

The cloister and buildings around the Great Court feature distinctive sandstone, carved with historical scenes, figures, the names of great thinkers and teachers, coats of arms, grotesques and carvings of Australian flora and fauna.

The Plough Inn Tavern was built in 1885, and is one of the oldest in Brisbane.  There is said the be a ghost haunting room 7.  She is the wife of a publican, who is said to have murdered her.

Urban Sketcher Brisbane, have a regular Sunday Sketchout, in and around the city.  This day we sketched at Queens Park, which is a small park between the Conrad Treasury hotel and Casino.
The Conrad Treasury Hotel was The Lands Administration Building.  Both the Treasury Hotel and Casino are heritage listed buildings and two of Brisbanes grandest.  The Lands Administration building  was designed under the supervision of chief government architect Thomas Pye, with plans prepared between 1898 and 1899
 Queens Gardens is a heritage-listed park.  was established in its present form in 1963, after the buildings which had occupied the area had been demolished. Queens Gardens was named in honour of Queen Victoria. A statue of Queen Victoria, based on an original in Portsmouth and created by English sculptor Thomas Brock, was unveiled in 1906 in the gardens in front of the Lands Administration Building.
At the other end of the gardens, with his back to the Queen,  is a statue of T. J. Ryan, Premier of Queensland (1915–1919)

Sketching South Brisbane Australia

Gargoyle on South Brisbane Town Hall.  This building had many wonderful relief's and wall decorations..  It was built in 1882

During World War II the old Town Hall and the neighbouring Cumbooquepa (now occupied and enlarged by Somerville House school) were occupied by the American Armed Services

In 1904, Australia's first electrically-driven clock was installed in the tower.
