Bulimba Brisbane Qld

I had a lovely day today, with fellow Urban Sketcher Sid from Cairns.  We haunted Bulimba, sketching the Golf Course,  a house built in 1927, and a quick sketch before a very late lunch..

City Sketching

Autumn/Fall is really here.  Quite cool for this sun-lover.  I left in anticipation of a lovely sunny day in a light three quarter sleeved shirt, to met by very fresh winds in the city.  What to do?  Hole up in a cafe of course.  We sat in Merlo cafe.  They have big glassed windows, perfect for sketching..

Still using my handmade sketchbook.  I really love the Saunders Waterford paper, so must order more before I finish this book.

Treasury Hotel Courtyard

The Treasury Building was erected in three stages between 1886 and 1928.  The Treasury Building, a four-storied masonry perimeter block, occupies an entire city block bounded by Queen, George, Elizabeth and William Streets. It is built to the property alignment around a large central courtyard  It forms the northern edge of the group of important public buildings surrounding Queens Gardens.

The building was occupied by Government officials until 1989, when it was sold to the Treasury Casino.

 I am loving sketching in my handmade sketchbook.  

South Brisbane

I had fun today with a friend wandering around South Brisbane and sketching.  My first sketch is of the Fish lane Entrance, from the Cultural Centre Busway, and my second sketch is the giant cicada below..

Regent Theatre brisbane

The Regent Theatre in Brisbane was constructed as the first and only American-style Picture Palace to be built in Queensland. ... The Regent Building comprises part of the original Regent Theatre complex constructed on land between Queen Street and Elizabeth Street, between 1928 and 1929.
The picture palaces were built to imitate Hollywood's Golden Era and were designed to function as a cinema and theatre.

Queen Street is Brisbanes oldest street. The  Street began as little more than a track leading from the main part of the early Moreton Bay Penal Colony, running northward, crossing the watercourse then known as Wheat Creek, with a deviation leading up to the Windmill.

Brisbane's recorded history dates from 1799, when Matthew Flinders explored Moreton Bay on an expedition from Port Jackson, although the region had long been occupied by the Jagera and Turrbal aboriginal tribes. The town was conceived initially as a penal colony for British convicts sent from Sydney.   A permanent settlement in the region was not founded until 1823, when New South Wales Governor Thomas Brisbane was petitioned by free settlers in Sydney to send their worst convicts elsewhere and the area chosen became the city of Brisbane. 

Queen Street  is around 205 years old..

BRISBANE CITY SKETCHERS

My Bakery Lane Brisbane

I had a lovely morning with the Brisbane City Sketchers, listening to Jazz taking in all the amazing aromas from the eateries in the Lane, and the ambiance.  Bakery Lane is named after the bakery that operated here in days gone by. 

Brisbane lane-ways became derelict places and dangerous, so the Brisbane City Council devised a plan to clean them up.  There are eight  that i know of now that are fabulous places to go for boutique shopping and awesoem food.

Brisbane Synagogue

Wonderful morning this morning sketching the Brisbane Synagogue in Margaret Street  

The Synagogue was designed by Arthur Morry and built from 1885 to 1886 by Arthur Midson. 
The Brisbane Hebrew Congregation is the largest Jewish organisation in Queensland and its Synagogue is the oldest in Queensland.

Sketching in the City

Maritime Museum, Memorial Park, Kangaroo Point Cliffs.  Such great places to sketch, so much history.

Queens Park and Williams Street

Super fun morning with the Brisbane City Sketchers in Queens Park Brisbane.  Queens Gardens is a heritage-listed park located on a city block between George Street, Elizabeth Street and William Street in the Brisbane CBD. It was built from c. 1905 to 1990s  It is soon to be transformed, with the Queens Wharf development happening. It is a bittersweet development.  

Our historical buildings in this area are going to be re-purposed..  I am saddened that only the facades of the historical buildings are on the Heritage Register.  The interior of these amazing buildings are fabulous too.

This is the Tower of Power dwarfing the historic buildings below. 
Queen’s Wharf Road and William Street are two of the oldest streets in Brisbane.  The two historic buildings in my drawing are the Immigration Depot (later to become the national trust House)  The building was erected in 1865-1866 It was located adjacent to the Queen’s Wharf, which was the point of arrival for thousands of immigrants entering the new free colony between 1848 and 1897. Queen’sWharf was located in the area now known as the north bank of the Brisbane River.

and the Commissariat Store  which  was originally built by convict labour under the direction of Captain Logan as a permanent Commissariat Store for the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. Presently, the restored and renovated building operates as the headquarters for the RHSQ, housing the museum

 These statues are situated in the Queens gardens.  The gardens were originally called the Executive Gardens for the Executive Building  and later changed after the statue of Queen Victoria was erected. Queens Gardens is a heritage-listed park located on a city block between George Street, Elizabeth Street and William Street in the Brisbane CBD  It was built from c. 1905 to 1990s

Spring Hill

I had a really fun morning in Spring Hill today with the Brisbane City Sketchers.

The weather was kind, only a couple of spits of rain, some blue skies and sometimes sunshine.  What more can an Urban Sketcher want :-)  

Spring Hill is an old part of Brisbane City,  and was so named in the nineteenth century because the hill on which the suburb was built was the source of the creek that was Brisbane's first fresh water supply. 

 My first sketch was of the Ballow Chambers. I have wanted to draw this building for ages.
The building was designed by Lange Leopold Powell and built from 1924 to 1926 by John Hutchinson.
From 1865 Wickham Terrace started to become the focal point of Brisbane's specialist medical practices.
This building was named after Dr David Ballow, onetime Colonial Surgeon and then the first doctor to establish a private medical practice in Brisbane. Ballow died in 1850 of typhus as a result of treating patients at the quarantine station on Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay. There is a plaque commemorating Ballow fixed to the front wall of the building.

The prisoners were made to work a rat-wheel as punishment to grind the flour in the windmill as it was then. . One slipped and fell and the captain in charge would not let them stop. The man was ground up I can imagine that they did not waste a speck of that flour either.

Pancake Manor

Fun Morning this morning with the Brisbane City Sketchers at Pancake Manor sketching inside on a wet Tuesday Morning.

Pancake Manor was originally Saint Lukes Church of England. It was designed by John Smith Murdoch and built  by John Steward & Co. and was dedicated on 14 August 1904 

 

 

 

South Brisbane Train Station

What a fun morning, three of us went to the train station to sketch it.  It is a gorgeous historical building built in 1891 and still operational today..

FISH LANE

Fun morning with the Brisbane City Sketchers in Fish lane South Brisbane this morning.  

A little history of Fish lane;

In December 1849, the Church of England acquired 1 acre, 3 roods, 8 perches of land on the
Southern side of the then ‘bridgeless’ Brisbane River for the purposes of building a church, school
and parsonage. The vacant land stretched along a block facing Melbourne Street in the scattered
settlement of South Brisbane, bordered by Grey Street on the south and Stanley Street on the north
(which at that time ran right through the suburb past Montague Road to the river).
Within a few years a small church, St Thomas’, was built on the site, set back some way from its
Melbourne Street frontage. This, only the second episcopal church in Brisbane, was a modest
building of ‘brick and rubble’, fenceless in a field from which cows and goats would occasionally
stray inside. During the week a school was run in the church and over the following decades
improvements to the building were gradually made and parishioners increased.Fish Lane, named after Mr George Fish was the track the parishioners use to get to the Church for services.

The church has long gone, and progress has taken over.
