A walk in the rain..

What  a crazy day it was.  I was going sketching at the Old Museum at Bowen Hills.  I caught the train to Fortitude valley.  All good. Got off train, turn on GPS on my phone and set off for a 8 minute walk. Simple huh.  Noooooooooo.  Not simple, I did not realise my GPS was still set to drive and not walk, so my GPS thought I was a car and took me on a long, long walk.  2 hours in total pretty much. 😂

Consequently,  instead of arriving to meet the other Brisbane City Sketchers  at 0900. I arrived about 1045. 

I was bedraggled and damp.  It was windy,  raining as well.  It was quite an adventure, and we all had a good laugh about it ..

I bought a coffee first up eh, then settled in to sketch the Coffee Kiosk.

 

 

Sketching the Manly Boat Harbour Brisbane Qld

Wynnum Manly has managed to maintain its rich history as one of the oldest areas of Brisbane. The Bayside suburbs offer an abundance of heritage buildings, places and landmarks that tell a story from indigenous occupation to European settlement, the threat of invasion and the development of a seaside community.
The jewel in the crown of Wynnum-Manly is the Manly Boat Harbour. This impressive harbour is the largest small-craft harbour in Queensland and is a safe haven for hundreds of crafts. It was established in 1958 and in 1964 the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron moved its clubhouse to the harbour. The stone breakwaters at the harbour entrance provide protection and a handy place to fish.
This is a favourite place4 of mine to visit and sketch and paint, as it is only a 15 minute drive from my house.

FERNBERG - Government House Brisbane Queensland

The Brisbane City Sketchers had a wonderful afternoon at Fernberg, at the Governors Open House. This is a magnificent Historical building built in 1865. The name Fernberg is German for distant mountain. Fernberg is a working vice-regal residence - a unique combination of private residence, busy office, public symbol of the State’s prestige, guardian of important traditions, and proud protector of the State’s history and heritage. The property has changed hands multiple times during its lifetime, but has been the official residence and workplace of Queensland Governors for more than a century.

It is presently occupied by the present Governor of Queensland His Excellency the Honorable Paul de Jersey AC (Companion of the Order of Australia)

Woolloongabba Village

Beautiful autumn morning sketching with the  Brisbane City Sketchers in the historical "Gabba" Village.  

Woolloongabba,  "Wulonkoppa" and  comes from an Aboriginal word, and there   are different interpretations as to its meaning - either whirling waters or fighting place. Home to the Brisbane Cricket Ground since 1896.  The area is an ancient waterway, and there are underground springs there.  The village is full of wonderful historical buildings, cafes and bars.  

The Moreton Rubber Building was built in 1890, and house the shops.  The owners of the shops lives upstairs in the second story, where they had verandas and french doors opening out onto them.  A beautiful sight, and magnificent building.  Sadly the verandahs have gone, the french doors boarded up and turned into fixed windows.  makes part of the facade of the building where they once were look terribly sad.

This heritage listed building is now a bar/bistro.  The interior is amazing, loving restored and when you walk in the doors you are taken back to a bygone era.

The University of Queensland

Friends and I sketched in Wordsmith cafe and in the Great Court today. It was a beautiful autumn morning.

Richards Building, named after Henry Caselli (H.C.) Richards (1884-1947), first Professor of Geology at UQ, and a dynamic teacher, administrator and academic.

 Great Court is a heritage-listed university colonnade at the University of Queensland, St Lucia, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Jack Hennessy, junior and built from 1937 to 1979.

Captain Burke Park

Brisbane City Sketchers hit captain Burke park today.  It was a wonderful morning.

The Brisbane City Sketchers  went to South Brisbane today.  The Fish Lane Festival was on and there were all kinds of food and live music.

Boggo Road Gaol

Sketching the Heritage Listed Boggo Road Gaol with the BRISBANE CITY SKETCHERS
Boggo Road Gaol was a notorious Australian prison and is located on Annerley Road in Dutton Park.
In 1863, land off Boggo Road was surveyed and set aside as a government reserve before being proclaimed a gaol reserve in 1880.
Boggo Road Gaol opened in 1883 as the Brisbane Gaol. It was used mainly as a holding prison for those serving short sentences or on remand. Its initial infamy came from it being a place of execution. In 1903, a new purpose-built separate women's gaol was created.
Today, the prison is open for the public to visit through guided historical tours run by Boggo Road Gaol Pty.

Brisbane City Sketchers in Bardon!

The Barden Water Tower was built in 1927 to supply Paddington with water. It was designed and built by the Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board on Archibald's Hill, some 100 metres above sea level. The tower itself is over 21 metres high, holding 100,000 gallons of water. The water came in from Enoggera Dam and was pumped into the tower by an electric pump driven by the power grid that supplied electricity to Brisbane's trams. This was one of several water towers constructed around this time in such suburbs as Albion, Enoggera and Tarragindi. The Paddington tower is somewhat different in that it has been built on concrete columns, and it may be the only one of its type in Queensland.

Sketching South Bank with the Brisbane City Sketchers

The Nepal Peace Pagoda in Brisbane, is located at the transformed Brisbane World Expo '88 site, South Bank Parklands. It is one of the most significant heritage items in Brisbane from the hosting of the Expo. It is the only international exhibit remaining on the site. In 1991 it was moved to its current location, amongst the rainforest near the northern riverbank entrance to the Southbank Parklands

The Peace Pagoda was built by German architect Jochen Reier (APAC) on behalf of the Kingdom of Nepal. Immediately, 80 tonnes of indigenous Nepalese timber were sourced from the Terai jungle forest of Nepal, carted across to the capital Kathmandu where 160 Nepalese families worked for two years at crafting its diverse elements. These were then shipped to Australia in two 40-foot containers and one 20-foot container, where they were assembled at the Expo site by a handful of Australian workers under Nepalese supervision. The final assembly for World Expo '88 only took a few days.

The Grand Arbour at South Bank is 1 km long and it is fully covered with gorgeous purple bougainvillea.  The is fully decorated with pretty red Chinese lanterns right now in readiness for Buddha Birth Day Festival.
