New Farm Park Brisbane

Cold and windy, that is how I describe today.  The sun was shining brilliantly, but there was no warmth in this winters day.  I sat with my friend and sketched the historic bandstand.  I didn't get it finished, and will need to go back sometime..

Drawn on Arches 140lb cold pressed, with a 2B graphite.

PADDINGTON - Brisbane Qld

The title "Paddington" was given to this area after the London suburb of the same name.  Paddington was originally referred to as being "Back of the Jail". The main jail was located on Petrie Terrace from 1860 – 1883 Brisbane Petrie Terrace Gaol accommodated  96 prisoners in 2 cell blocks.
The Police Barracks  was from 1883 – 1885 Petrie Terrace Police Depot, where  police training, operations, stabling of horses,  and also a motor vehicle depot.

In the 1860s there was a rumour that gold had been discovered in the Paddington area. Two shafts were sunk, one in the Paddington Cemetery, but no gold was found.

My first sketch was of the Caxton Street Hall - Built in 1883 by the Loyal United Brothers Lodge. It has served as an Oddfellows Friendly Society Lodge (1884-1916), a clothing factory (1909-38) and a Labor Party Hall (1928-99).

Second sketch was of this fun building on the corner of Caxton Street and Weetman Street.
Both sketches were don on Arches 140lb cp 11"x15" with Pen and ink, and watercolour.

That is my easel set up you see :)

Mowbray Park - Brisbane Qld

Historical Mowbray park was named after Reverend Thomas Mowbray, who arrived in Brisbane in 1847.  One od the earliest recreations was the   East Brisbane Tidal Baths, which was a 1920 swimming enclosure against the river bank in Mowbray Park. In the beginning separate bathing hours applied for males and females.
Mowbray park is now a gorgeous recreational park hosting the Mowbray Park Ferry Terminal.  You get gorgeous views to Brisbane CBD from there.

First sketch of the day. I did start the following sketch, got the sky in, but the watercolour rook too long to dry so I put it aside and did this one.

My sky had dried by the time we had all had morning tea, so my friend and I went back to sketch some more and I finished this.  It was a very enjoyable morning.

Queens park - Sitting in the Sun

Queens Park is a site that, being so integral to the early days of Brisbane, has a lot of history. The Anglican Parish of St John stood in this park from 1854 to 1904, and it became the pro-cathedral when the Diocese of Brisbane was created in 1859.

The gardens were originally called the Executive Gardens, after the Executive Building, but were renamed Queens Park when a statue was dedicated to Queen Victoria was erected.. The old Executive Building has been refurbished and is now the Conrad Treasury Hotel.  The gardens were renamed Queens Gardens, but known these days as Queens Park.

A statue of TJ Ryan, who was Premier of Queensland from 1915 to 1919 stands with his back to the Queen on the North West corner. The statue was sculpted by Bertram MacKennal and was commissioned by public subscription. It is situated at the entrance to the park on the corner of William St and Elizabeth St.

Queens Gardens was established in its present form in 1963, after the buildings which had occupied the area had been demolished. A statue of Queen Victoria, based on an original in Portsmouth and created by English sculptor Thomas Brock, was unveiled in 1906 in the gardens in front of the Lands Administration Building.
Also in the gardens is a  Royal Australian Air Force memorial and field gun.

Trophy of British Valour The trophy of British valour is a German World War I field gun located in a corner of the gardens. It was presented to Queensland by Lord Kitchener, on behalf of His Majesty King George V on 18 August 1917.

I sat in the sun on a park bench and looked across George Street, and a tiny Historical Building - Sutton House (1928) Nestled amoung the huge high rise buildings (Sketch number one)

Sketch number two, I turned towards the Treasury Hotel, and saw the "Tower of Power" peaking over the top.  This hug4e building is almost finished externally.

Historical Victoria Army Barracks.

Sketching at the Victoria Barracks Brisbane (Australia)
Army Museum South Queensland (formerly known as the Victoria Barracks Museum) is a Heritage-listed site containing many reminders of early life in the Colony of Queensland and the early days of the Commonwealth. The buildings date from 1864, for the British Imperial Garrison to specifications from the War office in London, although the majority were built just before or just after Federation. The Barracks is still in use today as a Tri-Service institution.

All are Sketched in my Mont Marte A5 Sketchbook Pen and ink - watercolours

This building was the stables.  A false floor has been put in over the cobblestones and the building is now a function hall.
