PLATFORM 3 - ROMA STREET STATION

What an awesome morning!  The Brisbane Urban Sketchers met at Platform 3 to sketch today for our Sketchout Tuesday.  It just happens to be Queensland Rails 150th Years of Rail Celebration week. The architecture of Platform three has been loving restored, and it just magnificent.  Work on portions of it is still undergoing, but a large area was open to the public as a museum.

The train on display today was the 1901 - one of the two self propelled diesel railcars- SRC’s.
The 1900 class, (1900 and 1901 as the railcars were designated), were placed in service in 1956. In the early 1960’s, 1901 worked on country and suburban services. Between 1983 and 1985 it worked on special parcels and freight business, also on railmotor services, outside of Brisbane, and on the Ipswich-Helidon railmotor service in the early 1990’s. 1901 has also been used on special charter tours for enthusiast groups  and has travelled throughout Queensland.  1901 today is used as a rail inspection vehicle by Queensland Rail.

Sketching at Chinatown Brisbane Qld 14th July 2015

It was an unusually ccccold day in Brisbane on Tuesday 14th.  The Brisbane Urban Sketchers came out to sketch no matter that  was 5 degrees Celsius at 6.00am  Thirteen of us came out, it was a great morning..

My friends Vivienne and Deirdre had the right idea.  They were standing in the sun sketching. The lions at the entrance to the mall, there are two of them,  are reported to weigh 320kg and sit there to prevent evil spirits from entering the area. They were a gift from the People's Republic of China.

Coffee time is always a load of fun.

Sketching at the University of Qld at St Lucia

Sketchout day with the Brisbane Urban Sketchers, braving the sudden arctic cold snap we have, in fact, it was a lovely day, and warm.
I was going to sit and sketch the graceful curve of the cloisters from the inside, but upon walking around, I found a delightful parklet behind the cloister, with seats in the sun.

My first sketch of the day was the brick work.  I sketched the reliefs from the columns on the way to the Writers Cafe where we met for coffee.

Thank you for looking.

The Shire Clerks Cottage

I took myself off today, to sketch a building I have wanted to sketch for a very long time.  It is a beautiful building, built in 1890 as a residence for the Shire Clerk of the Kianawah Divisional board, later to become the Wynnum Shire Council, the Wynnum Town Council, before being amalgamated into the Brisbane City Council in 1926. The Wynnum Town Hall was originally located on the adjacent site. The cottage was completely restored in 1984.

Saturday and Tuesdays sketches with the Brisbane Urban Sketchers..

It has been a great couple of sketchouts, with the Brisbane Urban Sketchers.  The first was to beautiful Moorlands House, on the grounds of the Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower, the second was to Anne Street Brisbane to sketch "The Drover" a Human factor sculpture by John Underwood for Expo '88

 The gates of Moorland House
Perched on a hill overlooking Coronation Drive and the river, Moorlands is possibly Brisbane’s most notorious and intriguing historical residence. Designed by architect Richard Gailey in 1892 at the behest of the infamous Mayne family to replace the earlier family home Moorlands Villa that originally stood on the spot, the foundation stone was laid by the widow of butcher Patrick Mayne and underneath it is understood to be a kind of time capsule containing the newspapers of the day and the reason for the house’s construction.  It sure would make great reading.

Outside the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries building on the pavement is a wonderful sculpture by John Underwood called "The Dovers" It was one of 100 Human factor series created for Expo '88
It was so cold sitting here, with the wind blowing through like a wind tunnel.  We were shivering, our hands were numb, as was my seat.

Last sketch was at the Anne Street Presbyterian Church.
